We assist with the purchase of mobility equipment, communication devices, medical and assistance dogs, and essential medical and health equipment to support Victorian children with a medically diagnosed chronic illness or disability.

Applications open on Wednesday, 10 June and close on Friday, 21 August 2026.

Before You Apply

Please check if the item can be funded through NDIS or other services first. Variety supports children who have no other options available.

You may be eligible if:

You qualify to apply for an individual grant if the benficiary is a resident of Victoria, aged 17 or under at the round closing date, and has a disability or long-term health condition that is recognised by a designated health professional.

Additionally, your family household income should be below $200,000 per annum, taking into account all sources of income, such as child support payments, rental income, investment income, or any other income received by any parent or caregiver who is financially responsible for the beneficiary.

Previous recipients can apply for another grant two years after the date listed on their original successful outcome letter.

Documents Required To Apply

Don’t worry — most families already have these documents available.

A medical letter

A letter from your child’s GP, paediatrician or medical specialist confirming their diagnosis or condition.

• Must be on letterhead
• Signed and dated (within 6 months)

Two support letters 

A letter from a relevant healthcare professional (e.g. OT, speech therapist, physio) explaining:

• Why the item is needed
• How it will support your child
• Expected outcomes
• Evidence of a trial (or why not suitable)
• Must be on letterhead and dated (within 6 months)

Proof of household income

Recent financial documents to show your household income:

• ATO Income Statement (required)
• Plus one of the following:
• Recent payslip
• Centrelink statement
• Tax return (if self-employed)

Two quotes for the item

Quotes from suppliers for the requested item:

• From two suppliers
• No older than 3 months
• Must remain valid during assessment

How the Application Process Works

Our team reviews your application carefully and confidentially.
Outcome in approximately 4–10 weeks. 12 months to use the grant.

Application

Complete the online form and submit all required documents, including supporting letters and quotes.

• Applications must be submitted online
• Must be completed and signed by a parent/carer
• Incomplete applications may be delayed

Assessment

Our team reviews your application to ensure it meets the guidelines. Eligible applications are assessed by our grants committee.

• Reviewed for eligibility and completeness
• Assessed based on need and financial situation
• May be referred to the Variety Victoria Board for approval

Outcome

You’ll receive an outcome via email once the process is complete.

• If approved, payment is made directly to the supplier
• You will receive next steps and instructions
• Grants must be used within 12 months

  • Warranties, insurance, maintenance, service agreements, batteries, repairs
  • Administrative fees or operational costs
  • Sports equipment that is non-adaptive or not sure support special needs
  • Expenses that have already been initiated or have already occurred prior to submission or written approval
  • Incomplete application forms including applications without valid supporting documentation.
  • Equipment from non-Australian distributors that cannot be invoiced directly to Variety or services outside Australia
  • Capital works
  • Installation costs
  • Cars, car modifications or e-bikes

No. If your application is approved, Variety will pay the supplier directly for the item or equipment. You’ll be guided through the next steps once your application is successful.

Variety provides Individual Grants to support children with disability, illness or disadvantage. This may include mobility equipment, assistive technology, communication devices and essential medical or health equipment.

You can apply if:

  • The child is aged 0–17 years
  • You live in Victoria
  • The child has a diagnosed disability or long-term health condition
  • Your household income is under $200,000 per year

Each application is assessed based on the child’s needs and your financial situation. We also look at how the requested item will support the child’s development, independence and overall wellbeing.

If you’re unsure, we encourage you to speak with your GP, therapist or support worker before applying. You can also contact our team for guidance — we’re here to help.

Applications are reviewed after each funding round closes. Please allow up to 10 weeks for an outcome.

No. You do not need to be on the NDIS to apply. However, if you are, you may need to explain why the requested item is not covered by your plan.

Yes. Previous recipients can apply again after two years from the date of their last approved grant.
